I relate these events not out of official duty, but owing to my own desire to have a record of what is happening should some further calamity occur and this be the end of my tale.
My name is Qoi and I am the navigator aboard the Ocean’s Lure. My current duties do not include keeping logs of our voyages, for that task is assigned to another, yet old habits are hard to break. Aboard the Golden Gill, which is the ship I sailed upon prior to joining the crew of the Lure, I was charged with maintaining said logs. It is a task that I sometimes return to now, not in an official capacity, but as a means to organize my thoughts. I also wish to have my own deeds and feelings recorded, if for no other reason than as proof that I was here and was a part of this incredible time in our world’s history.
We’ve recently escaped from the clutches of the Seafarers League. As we left Eaglesport in New Mythoss and headed back home, we were intercepted by the Seafarer’s vessel called the Undertow. Captain Ironskull and his crew attacked, and I feared we were done for. Thankfully for us, those we carried with us as emissaries from New Mythoss proved to be more than capable of handling themselves in a fight. General Delphina and Vitus knew nothing of the Undertow’s grim reputation or the true danger we were in, yet even if they had known the direness of our circumstances, I do not believe they would have hesitated for a moment to respond as they did.
It is worth relaying here that the majority of our crew are fishers, not fighters, but they will also not back down when threatened. Following the example of the soldiers from New Mythoss, along with the lead of our own fearless captain, we beat back the Seafarers League. We left the Undertow taking on water and unable to pursue us as we sailed away.
While we had emerged from danger, we were not unscathed. Many members of our crew had sustained injuries, and we had lost two deckhands who had been impaled by weapons hurled by the Undertow’s Rosmurrian harpooner. We sent their bodies to the depths and bade they find peace in the seas of the Great Beyond.
In addition to our crew’s injuries, the Lure itself was also damaged in the fighting. While we were not crippled the way that the Undertow was, neither were we in any shape to bear another attack. Captain Ajjax feared what would happen should Ironskul have called for assistance from others in the League. We needed to make repairs, but we had to evade other Seafarers long enough for us to make those repairs. For my part, I worried that our route was compromised, and that if we headed home by the normal lanes of travel we would find some of Captain Ironskul’s fellow League members in our way. It was for this reason that I began to chart a new course, one I hoped would keep us safe. I was still working on those plans when our captain commanded that we head not for our home port where we were expected, but deeper out to sea and eventually to other shores where we could hide out until the Ocean’s Lure was fully fit once again.

I am sure it is no surprise that our crew were none too happy with this command, for it had been some time since we had seen home and the safety of familiar shores was all that any could think of after our narrow escape from the Undertow’s marauders. Yet, we are all loyal to our captain, and we followed his orders with minimal discontent.
For my part, I pored over maps and charts seeking a friendly harbor where we could find safety. The captain watched me toil before eventually pointing to where he wished for us to land – the home of the vampiric Amaranthieans of the Arezzian Dynasty known as the Scarlett Abyss.
Make no mistake, I trust my captain. I have not sailed with him for very long, but through both words and deeds he has proven his worth and commitment to the well-being of his crew more times than I can count, yet I could not help but question this command. While the Arezzian Dynasty had no quarrels with the Fishers Guild of which I was aware, they also did not have any formal treaties or agreements. The catches in our holds did not appeal to the palette of the Amaranthieans, and as such our Guild had no cause to visit their shores.
Now, to say that our captain is well-traveled would be an understatement. He had ventured far and wide on both sea and land before he took command of the Ocean’s Lure. While he is usually tight-lipped about those travels, generous amounts of Amuurian rum tend to loosen his secrecy and allow his tales to flow unbidden. Still, I expect that as remarkable as the tales he has told are, they are a small sample of the wonders he has seen. I say all of this to offer an explanation for why I trusted my captain when he commanded us to the shores of the Arezzian Dynasty and told us he believed they would help us due to some business he had with them in the past. It was well known that the black ships of the Arezzians with their distinctive red sails were some of the most impressive vessels upon the seas of Mythoss - so it is not a stretch to imagine that the shipwrights of the Scarlett Abyss could possibly be our salvation.
My surprise at our destination was shared by the rest of our crew, and those aboard from New Mythoss were particularly concerned about the captain’s command. When we explained the nature of the Amarathine species to General Delphina and Vitus, they likened what they heard from us to what they knew as “vampires.”
Vampires were counted amongst the enemies of the good kingdoms of New Mythoss. I had not yet seen one of these creatures whom our new friends had called “The Brood” during my visits to their lands, but from their descriptions they seemed to share some traits with the members of the Amaranthine species, while also being so different in many other ways from the Arezzian Dynasty. We did our best to assure our guests that this plan was our best hope, but I will admit here in these pages that the arguments we made were also intended to convince members of our crew who were still uneasy with the Captain’s command.
We spied the shores of the Scarlet Abyss early this morning. We thankfully did not see any League vessels along the way, which is good, because the direness of our situation became clearer the further we sailed. We would not have survived another encounter with the Seafarers.
Anchored a short distance offshore, close to a black sand beach that ran along the western edge of the Scarlet Abyss, we saw the distinctive flag of the Arezzian Dynasty planted in those sands, clearly marking these lands as belonging to Emperor Drakkosyr and his family.
Our captain set the crew to work on repairs while a few of us were charged with making for shore to seek to acquire additional assistance from those who called these lands home. The warrior named Vitus would stay with our crew to help with those repairs and to provide them with some additional security.
Unsurprisingly, Captain Ajjax would lead our excursion ashore, and I was commanded to accompany him on this task. Many members of our crew, being tied to the waters due to the nature of their species, cannot venture from the sea for very long and, as such, were not suited to be part of this expedition. I was the exception, thanks to a “bauble” I acquired during my time in New Mythoss.
As is to be expected of sailors who spend so much time on the waters, during our time in New Mythoss our crew eagerly took advantage of the distractions offered by being in port for a time. I was no different, and during our stay in Eaglesport I became a regular fixture at the local taverns where I enjoyed the drink, entertainment, and games that could be found there. It is that last category, the games of chance, where I acquired the wavestone that I now possess.
During my visits to those aforementioned taverns, I was introduced to a game called Mercurian Dice. It was simple enough to learn, and I proved to be quite adept at it. During one friendly game, for we never bet more than small sums of coins or simple trinkets, I won a few Golden Eagles and a handful of stones. Nothing of great worth, but attractive enough. It wasn’t until I truly examined those stones later that I realized what I had actually acquired.
A wavestone is a rare and powerful magical item that, for one like myself, is priceless. Its magic keeps the strength of the sea close at all times, thereby allowing those who are dependent on the sea to venture far from its waves without losing any strength or stamina. The young man whom I won it from, being a human and not a water-dweller, would have had no idea of the stone’s powers, but I felt it as soon as I removed it from the leather pouch which it was handed to me in. The acquisition of the wavestone means that I can now leave our ship for extended periods of time, including on this adventure to the Scarlet Abyss.
General Delphina will also be included in the party that will set out ashore, and she will bring some of the soldiers she commands with her. She insisted upon this, and to my surprise, the Captain agreed, which made me wonder if he was as confident in his plan, and in our safety in the Amaranthieans’ lands, as he let on.
That brings us to the moment at hand. Our ship is anchored and the shore boat is ready to take us ashore. I record the events that have led us here so this story can be known, should I not return to be able to relate it otherwise.
As I close these pages, we set off into the unknown. We make for the Scarlett Abyss.
