When Super7 contacted us about their intention to add Conan to their growing line of ULTIMATES! Figures, we were thrilled to be able to contribute. Our years of work on Masters of the Universe, as well as our own Mythic Legions line, certainly gave us plenty of experience in the “sword and sorcery” kind of fantasy figures where Conan fits as well. Still, years of experience not withstanding, we were still excited for the opportunity to explore the iconic characters from both the Conan comics, and the live action films!
Comic Conan
The first shot we had at the Conan license for ULTIMATES! was a “comic style” version of the character. This version was based on artwork from the Marvel Comics depiction of this character. This was a great toy to work on, and style-wise he fits in wonderfully with MotU Classics displays since the body design of Conan is very similar to what Super7 and Mattel have released for MotU.
When this figure was first revealed, many fans were thrilled - but as expected, those who know Conan more from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies were clamoring for figures in that style. Well, they wouldn’t have to wait long…
Movie Conan
The “Conan the Barbarian” Wave 1 ULTIMATES! would answer fans’ called for “movie Conan” toys. This wave of 4 figures featured likenesses of the actors from the 1982 film. This wave included Conan, along with Thusla, Rexor, and Thorgrim figures. Each figure came with alternate heads and movie specific accessories.
These movie figures have recently begun shipping to fans, and the reactions we have seen so far are incredibly positive!
Classic Pose Conan
The iconic pose that Arnold hits at the end of the 1982 film provided the inspiration for the next figure in this line, which also essentially served as “Series 2”. Super7’s promo shot of this figure striking that pose made us so happy to see!
Conan ULTIMATES! Series 3
The third series of Conan the Barbarian Movie ULTIMATES! featured new renditions of two characters from the first series. This time we get Conan in War Paint, and possibly our favorite figure in the line so far – Thulsa Doom as the Snake Priest!
Pics of these can be seen below.
