More Information:

Like most legends, the story of King Arthur is a complex one, with many different variations of the tale. Most of these stories portray Arthur as the son of King Uther Pendragon and Igraine. The rightful heir to the throne of England, Arthur is taken as a young boy and hidden away by the wizard, Merlin, to protect him from his father’s enemies.

Fostered by Sir Ector, the young Arthur grows up as a squire to his adoptive brother, Sir Kay, fully unaware that royal blood flows through his veins.

As Arthur comes of age, Merlin returns to his side and reveals his true lineage. Tutoring Arthur, Merlin eventually leads him to a sword stuck in a stone. It is prophesized that the one who pulls the sword from the stone will be revealed as the rightful king, which Arthur does to begin his reign as the King of England.

There are some tales that suggest the sword that Arthur removed from that stone was the fabled Excalibur, while other legends say that the new king actually received that magical sword from the enchantress, Nimue, more commonly known as the Lady of the Lake. Regardless of how he came by Excalibur, Arthur would indeed wield this sword and, with Merlin by his side, he would establish his court at Camelot and the Round Table of loyal knights that would become a central part of these legends.

The tale of King Arthur does not have a happy ending, for tragedy and betrayal would eventually lead to the download of Camelot and the breaking of the Round Table. These betrayals would come in the form of an affair between his beloved wife, Guinevere, and his greatest knight, Sir Lancelot, as well as a challenge to his throne by his traitorous son, Mordred. The scheming of Mordred would culminate in the Battle of Camlann, where Arthur would fight his son to the death. While Arthur would prevail in this fight, he would be mortally wounded and many of his knights would die during this battle.

One of the few of Arthur’s knights to survive the Battle of Camlann was also one of the first ones to stand by his side, the loyal Sir Bedivere. It was Sir Bedivere who transported the wounded Arthur away from the Battle of Camlann, eventually taking him to the magical island of Avalon. As the gravely wounded Arthur lay upon his death bed, he made Sir Bedivere promise to return Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake. Reluctant to accept this task, but unable to deny his king his last request, the knight left Arthur at Avalon and did as he was bade, returning the King’s sword to the lake from where it came.

None would ever see King Arthur again, yet the legends of this great ruler persist even today, and many of those tales tell that Arthur is an eternal king, having never truly died, and is set to one day return as the “once and future king.”

Note: This figure, and the "Legends of Camelot" line of toys, was created for our annual LegionsCon event.
